Eat Local: Making the Most of Your Vacation
When you set off on a fantastic family vacation, it’s easy to fall into familiar routines—especially on a road trip. You stop at a freeway exit to refuel, grab a quick bite at the nearest chain restaurant, and hit the road again. After all, you’ve got places to go and limited time to get there.
But what about when you arrive—wherever “there” may be?
I encourage you to eat local. Seek out an establishment run by locals, where the community gathers to eat. Here’s why:

Why settle for the same meals you can get at home? Chances are, you’ve already been to most chain restaurants. Vacation is about trying new things, so step out of your comfort zone and embrace the unfamiliar.

Local restaurants often reflect the unique culture and cuisine of the area. Many use fresh, locally sourced ingredients. There’s something special about enjoying a peach shortcake made from fruit grown nearby or sampling regional specialties you can’t find anywhere else.
Support the Community
By dining locally, you’re giving back to the community. A few years ago, after a nerve-wracking helicopter ride, we stumbled upon Pho Kauai, a hidden gem in Hawaii. As the only out-of-towners there, we connected with locals over casual conversations and learned about the area from their perspective. Not only did we enjoy an incredible meal, but we also left with fond memories of the people who call the island home.

On a recent trip to southern Oregon, we found Four Daughters Irish Pub—a charming spot filled with character. The food was delicious, the atmosphere inviting, and the staff exceptional. It’s these kinds of discoveries that make vacations unforgettable.
